Senior Citizen Medicaid Eligibility Requirements
1. What Is Medicaid?
Medicaid is a jointly funded, Federal-State health care program for persons who are eligible financially. The program provides care for acute medical needs, rehabilitation, and long-term care at home and in nursing homes.
2. Does Medicaid Pay for Long-Term Care?
Yes. Medicare does pay for long-term care.
3. If I Give Away My House and All My Money Will I Qualify?
Not at all. We advise you to consult an elder-law attorney to understand the acceptable ways to “spend down” assets to qualify for Medicaid as a low-income senior.
4. How Do I Apply?
Apply through Hawaii’s Medicaid program.
5. How Soon Will Coverage Start?
Expect coverage to begin from 3-months before the application’s approval. Applications may take longer than expected. Ask about the standard approval time frame when you submit your initial coverage application.
6. What is the minimum asset requirement to qualify?
Asset requirements are usually limited to $2,000.
7. Does Medicaid Long-Term Care Have a Limit?
No, Medicaid will pay for long-term care in a nursing home for as long as a senior qualifies for needing the care.
